Welcome to the African Spirit website. We are a registered non-profit organisation, based primarily in the Midlands region of KwaZulu-Natal, who teach crafting and basic business skills to unemployed and indigent individuals. Crafting workshops include bead, candle and soap making, crochet woodwork and clay design; while business training covers business planning, proposal writing and other business skills. Not only do these new talents allow individuals to create marketable products, but they are left with the confidence and expertise to generate an income and this in turn is reinvested in their communities.
The KZN Midlands region is currently suffering from a severe economic recession; many employers have closed down in recent times, specifically in the towns of Howick, Mooi River and Estcourt. This, together with the high volumes of people who have left the rural areas looking for work, has resulted in a high rate of unemployment in the region, in excess of 50%.
Many inhabitants of the region of Estcourt would welcome the opportunity to become skilled in crafting, as a means to sustain themselves and their families. However, there are a limited number of organisations in the region that are able to provide training to these individuals, and organisations who can are unaffordable.
African Spirit aims to bridge this gap and to equip these individuals with a variety of design, crafting and business skills in order to create their own employment.
